Research Background

Since 2010, a series of heavy metal pollution accidents of mines broke out in different parts of the country. In some areas near factories, children's blood lead was found exceed the safety standard. Reports on heavy metal in food and consumers products also threatened public nerves. The national government has made a plan on heavy metal pollution control in the National Twelfth 5-year-plan. But the plan is not open to the public. In this sense, it's difficult for the citizen society to know the heavy metal pollution and to supervise the pollution control process.

The overall goal of this project is to promote public participation on heavy metal pollution control policies. The strategies of this program include monitoring, information disclosure, on-site investigation and policy analysis. The estimated results of this project would be a report of heavy metal on a certain kind of consumer products, investigation report on certain heavy metal pollution cases and a report on the heavy metal pollution control policy. These results will be produced by NU together with other 9 environmental groups, which are the members of the heavy metal pollution control NGO network to be established in this project.

All these monitoring, investigation and policy analysis reports will be used for public advocacy. We will hold activities to raise public awareness on heavy metal pollution. Also, these results will be sent to relative governmental departments along with NGOs' suggestions. [Sep. 2012]
